As always, the flaws in this book are my own doing, while what may be good here has come to me with help. Several people have provided invaluable aid and ideas. Richard Armstrong, ages ago, gave me suggestions for sources on scars. Matty Jankowski and Lisa Bell-Jankowski at the New York Body Archive were exceptionally helpful in gathering sources, images, and ideas for the Sacred Heart chapter. My research session at the archive was my first meeting with them, and I remain impressed by the amount of work they were willing to put into it as well as by the resources they've gathered. James DiGiovanna reminded me of critical passages in Nietzsche that were especially useful in the chapter on John, where discussion with Bruce Milem was also invaluable as a source of both references and ideas. Marcos Bisticas-Cocoves is a one-man research library, especially for questions of language, and has been infinitely patient with my inquiries. Carol Siegel was particularly helpful for her thoughts on the fold, but also for her enthusiasm about the project in general. In that regard I owe as well a special debt of gratitude to Virginia Burrus and Jennifer Glancy, whose faith in my work is so profound as to be contagious when I most need it. Both have also been endlessly helpful with their suggestions for further resources.
