4 Ordering Time and Space at Yaxnohcah: Creation and Renewal in a Preclassic Landscape

Abstract
The site of Yaxnohcah has a very large Preclassic center that was planned and designed with the cardinal and intercardinal directions of calendar time and centered on a cosmographic creation hearth in order to guide the establishment of an enduring social and political landscape, a kingdom. The authors review the substantial iconographic and historical information showing that the patterns at Yaxnohcah materialized calendar time and its ritual performances in procession. They detail the settlement patterns and the civic-religious center design that support their working hypothesis that this place materialized spatial-temporal designs of a kind termed landesque cosmography. Revered and revisited on pilgrimage in Late Classic times, the Yaxnohcah Preclassic city documents the early inception and enduring power of materialized time in lowland Maya culture.
