Abstract
Thomas E. Van Hyning takes a broad look at the uses and understandings of heritage across several Caribbean nations, including most notably through events—such as the Caribbean World Series—through some of the baseball halls of fame and museums in the region, as well as through the “living heritage” of the region’s baseball heroes. His exploration reveals that baseball heritage in the region reflects the broader culture and politics of the Caribbean, including the creation and maintenance of national cultures and heritage; interregional rivalries (and cooperation) through sport; and the region’s cultural and economic relationship with the United States. Van Hyning also posits that this region’s baseball heritage, which is as rich and diverse as that of the United States, requires further consideration.
