Abstract
This chapter introduces Alejandro Toledo, tracing his life, education, and development from a shoeshine boy in the impoverished Andean region of Áncash to his election to the presidency of Peru. Alejandro Toledo, as a presidential candidate and later as a president, was many things to many people. As a presidential candidate, his rags-to-riches story made him a darling of the international press, as well as among lower-class voters who looked to him as a role model. With a mixed ethnicity and distinct Indian features, he appealed to many Peruvians, traditionally excluded from the political mainstream, who shared a similar ancestry.
