Summary
Erythromycin formation decreased in Streptomyces erythreus as a function of the ammonium concentration present in the medium. Total inhibition of synthesis was obtained with 100 mM NH4Cl but medium pH and culture growth were not significantly affected. A similar effect was obtained with NH4NO3 or (NH4)2SO4 indicating that ammonium ion probably repressed formation of antibiotic.
