HeartScore® is the electronic counterpart of the SCORE risk charts published in 2003 in the European Guidelines on Cardiovascular Prevention1. It is a web-based interactive tool for predicting and managing the risk of heart attack and stroke in Europe. It is aimed at supporting clinicians to optimize individual cardiovascular risk reduction.
The program offers the two European versions based on the four SCORE risk charts: ‘European Low Risk' and ‘European Low Risk TC/HDL Ratio' for Belgium, France, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Spain, Switzerland and Portugal and ‘European High Risk' and ‘European High Risk TC/HDL Ratio' for all other European countries. The total cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein (HDL) ratio is commonly used in Germany, Poland and the Netherlands and requires the measurements of both total cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol.
The HeartScore® Windows version was launched in April 2004 and is based on the feedback received from its users; the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) has improved the existing functionalities of the program by developing a web-based version aimed at making HeartScore® more user friendly. This will not only facilitate access, but will also allow continued scientific updates (the integration of new cohort studies, risk factors and endpoints).
