Graphical Abstract
The challenge–skill balance in cardiac surgery. The greater the medical/surgical challenge of a patient, the higher is the required skill level of the treating team of physicians. That applies to both surgical technique and peri-operative care. If women present with a higher average challenge compared with men (yellow mark), they will obtain below average outcomes.
