Covering all hospitals in Sweden, SWEDEHEART is unique because it allows long-term follow-up and immediate feedback, says Ulf Stenestrand, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of cardiology and Senior consultant interventional cardiologist, Department of Cardiology, University Hospital, Linköping, Sweden, and President of SWEDEHEART.

In 2010 Sweden will host a unique online registry that will report the outcome of every patient hospitalized for acute coronary syndrome or undergoing coronary or valvular intervention. The Swedish Web-system for Enhancement and Development of Evidence-based care in Heart disease Evaluated According to Recommended Therapies (SWEDEHEART) is set to launch on 1 January at www.swedeheart.org.

Information is currently available at www.riks-hia.se, the website of the national registry for acute coronary care. RIKS-HIA is one of four national registries that will merge to form the new registry. The others are for heart surgery (formed in 1992), percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and coronary angiography (called SCAAR and formed in 1998), and secondary prevention (called SEPHIA and formed in 2005).
