Abstract
An increase in the polyamine content of the myocardium occurs early after an increased workload is imposed and appears to be concerned with the control of increased protein synthesis. Polyamines have been shown to stimulate RNA synthesis and to increase the transport of amino acids into myocardial cells.
The enzyme ornithine decarboxylase mediates the first step in the synthesis of polyamines. It has the remarkably short half-life of 20–25 min. Its activity increases within 30 min of an increased mechanical activity of the heart during exercise. Isoprenaline also stimulates its activity, but studies with propranalol show that the effects of exercise are not mediated through β-adrenergic mechanisms.
