Dear Editor,

Thank you Tedde [1] for your interest in our new guideline, which is the 1st guideline of its kind internationally for patients suffering from pectus abnormalities [2]. It is an international guideline from multiple organizations, including the Chest Wall International Group, which is the world’s largest group of clinicians interested in pectus abnormalities.

The intention of the guideline was to provide a unified and holistic approach to the evaluation and treatment of all patients suffering from this condition. The background to the guideline is that there is a very large difference in the quality of treatment for these patients internationally, varying from the outstanding service that you offer in Brazil and the exemplary services that we see in the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix and in Aarhus, Denmark to a complete lack of any services at all in England, which was the situation between 2019 and 2023.

Therefore, the scope of this guideline was quite wide reaching, including the investigation of the severity of the condition, supportive care, psychological support, non-surgical techniques including bracing and vacuum bell therapy as well as surgical techniques including the Ravitch procedure, the Nuss procedure (minimally invasive repair of pectus excavatum), pectus implants and other rare procedures such as Pectus Up.
