INTRODUCTION
The European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS) has been at the forefront of advancing cardio-thoracic surgery education and training within the European Union (EU). However, the impact of EACTS extends beyond EU borders, significantly benefiting non-EU cardiac and thoracic surgery training programs. This paper aims to underscore the positive impact of EACTS on non-EU residents in training and standardization of their training program relying on high-quality European leaders and teachers.
NON-EU CARDIAC SURGERY TRAINING PROGRAM (THE UKRAINE EXAMPLE)
The Ukrainian cardiac surgery training program originates from the Soviet Union program and still harbours some of its traits such as a short training period and the lack of an international academic development. After 6 years of medical school, graduates are required to undergo 3 years of general surgery residency followed by 6 months of ‘specialization’ in cardiac surgery. Given the extremely short training time, most of the residents apply to cardiac surgery centres where they are eligible to undergo training in both general and cardiac surgery simultaneously. In such circumstances, the provision of top-quality educational and training courses, opportunities to participate in research and leadership programs, and the ability to exchange direct experiences with prominent health care EACTS professionals are fundamental for the professional growth of young cardiac surgeons in non-EU programs.
