The authors regret that there is an error in the guidelines regarding the registration of clinical trials on page 182. The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors' (ICMJE) policy on prospective registration of clinical trials is effective from 1 July 2005. At this time, a clinical trial was defined as “any research project that prospectively assigns human subjects to intervention or comparison groups to study the cause-and-effect relationship between a medical intervention and a health outcome.”
For all trials that began enrollment on or after 1 July 2008, an expanded definition of a clinical trial came into effect to include “any research study that prospectively assigns human participants or groups of humans to one or more health-related interventions to evaluate the effects on health outcomes.”
We apologize for the error and hope this clarifies matters for authors considering submitting clinical trial reports to EJCTS and ICVTS. Authors unsure about registration requirements are advised to consult the ICMJE website ( http://www.icmje.org/about-icmje/faqs/clinical-trials-registration/ ) or contact the EJCTS editorial office.
