Abstract
This chapter provides a brief introduction to Jewish ethics, its conceptual foundations, textual sources, and historical development. It explains some of the religious beliefs that define the way Jews have traditionally approached ethical questions, as well as the way that the modern era led to radical theological changes. The chapter surveys three major approaches found among contemporary Jewish ethicists and has a concluding section that spells out the interpretive problems faced by all contemporary Jewish ethicists who wish to mine this ancient and multi-faceted tradition for normative guidance on the moral issues of our day.
