Abstract

The Oxford Handbook of Pre-Roman Italy (1000–49 BCE) is a comprehensive treatment of the peoples who lived on the Italian peninsula during the first millennium BCE—an age that opened with the rise of urbanism, was characterized by the flourishing of diverse and politically sophisticated communities, and ended with the political and cultural unification of the peninsula under Roman rule. This volume presents the diversity of the various indigenous cultures, including their interactions and reciprocal influences, during the period under consideration. The underlying idea is that there is neither a single overarching identity, nor a narrative of organic historical development, but rather a constantly changing pattern of intercultural exchange and communication that contributes to the fluidity of definitions of regional and local identities. Accordingly, in addition to offering treatments of the peoples and cultures, this volume focuses on events and factors that have played a mediating role in Italy’s history.
