Abstract
The chapter narrates Judith Chazin-Bennahum’s memories and experiences as a dancer from her beginnings at the High School of Performing Arts where she was a ballet major and studied with Selma Jeanne Cohen and danced with Bob Joffrey, to Brandeis University, an institution where may of her professors were refugees from the Holocaust, to her brief time in a show, Goldilocks on Broadway with Agnes de Mille and as a Soloist with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet when Antony Tudor was Director of Ballet, and soon after, her discovery of her Jewishness and Zionism, as well as her scholarly and historical interests in dance. Her books have focused on eighteenth-century ballet in France, fashion and ballet costumes during the nineteenth century in France, the ballets of Antony Tudor, and the lives of René Blum and Ida Rubinstein.
