Abstract
This chapter explains the economic production and exchanges in states and societies in precolonial Nigeria. It highlights the prehistoric period in modern-day Nigeria's territories, from the earliest archaeological findings in the Late Stone Age (LSA) to the Iron Age. It also describes socio-political complexity, and cultural and economic changes that took place in various territories that later became modern-day Nigeria from the year 1000 CE. The chapter recounts how iron tools had begun to replace stone tools, and trade routes began to link various societies. It discusses the different types of economic productions and trade, parameters for exchange, organization of trade, and changes from the late eighteenth century to the eve of the colonial conquest in the late nineteenth century.
