Abstract
The chapter sketches the history of psychology in Germany in the last 500 years, with emphasis on the difference between psychology as science and psychology as discipline. It delineates the evolution of the concept of a science of psychology that became widely accepted in Germany during the Enlightenment. In the 19th century three trends shaped the development: the discipline of physiology became the hotbed of experimental psychology; psychology became a required topic in the teachers’ examination, and thereby a miniature discipline in the philosophical faculty; and the Wundtian psychological laboratory united these processes. In the 20th century, the resulting constraints were forced open by new applications of psychology that led to a full-fledged discipline of psychology with a corresponding profession.
