Chronology of Medieval Authors

Note: The following is a chronological listing of all the medieval authors contributors mention in the form they have most commonly chosen. As editors we have not imposed an artificial consistency of nomenclature such as might be expected and would be easily achievable in an account of ancient Greek or Roman authors: we are content to have Jerome be known simply as “Jerome” rather than “Eusebius Sophronius Hieronymus,” correct but unrecognizable to all but a few. We err on the side of expansiveness in permitting, for the purpose of this list, “medieval” to stretch from the early fourth-century Biblical epic poet Juvencus to the sixteenth-century French humanist Michel de Montaigne. In many cases exact birth and death dates are unknown; when there is no scholarly consensus on an even approximate lifespan we have recourse to the traditional floruit (abbreviated “fl.”) to give the best estimate of the central period of the author's activity. Names in quotation marks indicate an authorial attribution that scholars regard as fictitious or at the least with great skepticism.
