Abstract
This chapter explores some of the challenges and opportunities Greek prose sources provide the religious historian. It asks in what ways prose texts may be thought of and approached as religious texts: it shows that the Greeks could use prose as a vehicle for articulating creative and involved religious reflection, and explores some ways in which prose texts engaged actively with religious experience. The chapter highlights the importance of engaging with particular sources with a view to their historical context, genre, and the distinctive projects of individual authors and individual texts. The insights which prose sources may offer into private religion are discussed, and issues concerning our approach to ‘critical’ texts are considered. The Attic orators, Herodotos and Pausanias, provide case studies which help to explore and illuminate these issues.
