Abstract
Calendrical systems in pre-Islamic Iran are surveyed here with particular emphasis on the use of calendrics in divination and astrology. The month names of the Old Persian calendar and the information on calendrics contained in Zoroastrian (Younger Avestan) sources are reviewed. The Zoroastrian civil calendar and the problem of intercalary months are treated, as is the development of later Iranian eras and related calendrical systems, for example, in Armenia, Cappadocia, Sogdiana, and Choresmia.
