Abstract
This chapter analyses how the ideological basis of the European Capital of Culture designation process for Istanbul constituted a form of Eurocentrism that employed both externally imposed orientalism and internalised orientalism. The designation of Istanbul as ECoC caused a reorientation of the construction of the city’s cultural heritage to look towards the Ottoman past through art and architectural events during 2010 which were to be on display for the international tourist. Yet in preparation for the ECoC, the Fatih municipality destroyed one of Istanbul’s most historic neighbourhoods, the Roma neighbourhood in Sulukule. This lived experience of homogenising the city to create a specific architectural public sphere to greet international tourists stands in direct opposition to the multiculturalist discourses of the ECoC application, but is reinforced by the neo-Ottoman vision of Istanbul.
