This book is the outcome of a four-year research project funded by the Research Council of Norway (grant number 250794). Writing it has been a very stimulating and rewarding process, not least thanks to the efforts and generosity of many good friends and colleagues who helped us bring it to fruition. We owe a special thanks to Professor Katrin Voltmer, who participated in the project from the start and contributed to the conception of the research idea. She guided our orientation to media and communication studies, which was a new terrain for us when we started. Her lucid thoughts and openhanded sharing of knowledge have been a constant source of inspiration. We are also deeply indebted to Sara Merabti Elgvin and Khaled Zaza, who assisted us with the research. Thanks to their groundwork on the Tunisian and Lebanese media scenes, the empirical tasks became much easier to handle. Sara reached out to journalists and facilitated the media content analysis, which is an important and labour-intensive ingredient in the book. Khaled provided precious fieldwork support, especially when the 2019–20 uprising in Lebanon happened. Both impressed us with their enthusiasm and competence. We thank Soumaya Hedhili for translating and transcribing the recordings of two roundtable discussions with Tunisian journalist. Cherine Randi Sellami helped us collect data for the case study on journalists’ reactions to the Bardo National Museum attack in 2015. Muslema Shahal analysed media coverage of the 2015 prisoner swap between the Nusra Front and the Lebanese army. Faten Ghosn provided advice on the same topic. A big thanks goes to Robin Blanton who proofread the manuscript and sharpened many of our formulations. We are grateful to Barakat Khalil for tidying up the Arabic language references in the book. Needless to say, we are responsible for any remaining shortcomings and blemishes.
