Abstract
This chapter is about the Çelebi branch of the Bektaşi order and the persistence of the Ulusoy family as the leading sacred patrilineage of the Alevi-Bektaşi community in the Turkish republican period. In the Ottoman period, the Çelebi branch (the Ulusoy family) was formally recognized as Hacı Bektaş Veli’s hereditary successors. After the establishment of the Republic, however, the family lost its granted privileges. The displacement of the family during the republican regime was destructive, because the hierarchical order within the “path,” in other words, the old social differentiation among mürşits, dedes, and talips, became blurred. In line with this, the authority of the mürşit was dispersed among all male members of the family. The competing claims of the efendis over the sacred authority led to further struggles over succession. However, this process was also constructive because family members undertook the newly emerging forms of authority. The title of efendi gained new meanings with the modification of the structure of the “path.” Sacred authority was converted into the political realm by being the founders of political parties or being elected as deputies in areas where Alevi-Bektaşi communities lived.
