Abstract
This chapter focuses on Fātimid al-Qā'im and the Umayyad 'Abd al-Rahmān III with certain focus on the sacrifice as exemplified in the biblical representation of Abraham's sacrifice. The first chapter discusses the execution of 'Abd Allāh, the son of the Umayyad Caliph 'Abd al-Rahmān III. Accused of conspiracy, 'Abd Allāh was made a sacrificial animal (udhiyya) for the Festival of Sacrifice ('īd al-adhā). The second section analyses execution as sacrifice. The third section explores the possible connection of Abd Allah's execution with the rivalry between the Umayyads and the Fatimids during the 4th/10th century. The fifth section focuses on sacrifice and circumcision within the context of the Abraham model of sacrifice. The chapter ends with a self-projection of Umayyad 'Abd al-Rahmān III as Abraham and al-Qā'im.
