I have enjoyed the advice and support of a great many colleagues, friends and students in the Department of Literature, Film and Theatre Studies at the University of Essex. I am grateful to all those whose ideas and opinions have undoubtedly made it into this book under the guise of my own opinions. Sadly, I cannot rightly recall who said what and when; I can only offer a general thank you and hope that this will suffice. A specific thank you should go to Jeff Geiger for all his help during the preparation of this book.
I am greatly indebted for the advice, criticism and encouragement given to me by David Musselwhite. David, you read every word when you did not have to, and it breaks my heart knowing that you did not live to see it realised. I can only hope that you would have been proud of me. I must also acknowledge my colleague and friend John Cant for all the fruitful and engaging discussions; for his brilliant observations on the Western and a great many other things besides. Whatever insights this book can lay claim to, he can lay claim to most of them first. John, I owe you a great deal. I am, of course, grateful to my parents for all their love and support, and for generally giving me the best upbringing I could have hoped for. I am happy to mention Sophie Cansdale, Shohini Chaudhuri, Maria Cristina Fumagalli, Richard Gray, John Haynes, Geoff King, Ildiko Olah and Andrew Patrick Nelson, all of whom have helped me in numerous ways over the years. I also would like to thank Gillian Leslie, Jenny Peebles and Rebecca Mackenzie of Edinburgh University Press for making the publication process run so smoothly.
