The American Society for Clinical Pathology offers information and education that can aid your practice as pathologists or laboratory professionals. Whether you read the printed journals or get your information online, the American Journal of Clinical Pathology (AJCP) and Lab Medicine provide the latest research, reports, and studies. Here are some highlights from recent issues.
AJCP
The April issue features an article on statistical quality control by Westgard and Westgard, “Establishing Evidence-Based Statistical Quality Control Practices,” along with an accompanying editorial by Yago and López-Escribano. Horton et al compare the most common diagnostic/laboratory tests across five different referral hospitals by volume and revenue in their article in the May issue, “The Top 25 Laboratory Tests by Volume and Revenue in Five Different Countries.” Guarner et al give context to the article in an editorial. A June article by Chen et al, “Frozen-Section Checklist Implementation Improves Quality and Patient Safety,” describes the implementation of a checklist to reduce pre-analytic errors in the frozen section suite.
Lab Medicine
The May issue of Lab Medicine features a review by Sepheri et al, “Toll-Like Receptor 4 as an Immune Receptor Against Mycobacterium tuberculosis: A Systematic Review.” Several online-only papers are featured on the Lab Medicine website. Kazama Tachibana writes about the importance of the specimen reception department to the overall flow of the laboratory, and Dr. Maness et al present their study about the inhibitory effects of essential oils on common fungal species. In addition, the latest installment of our podcast series covers evidence-based studies in the laboratory medicine field. All of this and more can be found on labmedicine.com.
