The American Society for Clinical Pathology offers information and education that can aid your practice as pathologists or laboratory professionals. Whether you read the printed journals or get your information online, the American Journal of Clinical Pathology (AJCP) and Lab Medicine provide the latest research, reports, and studies. Here are some highlights from recent issues.

AJCP

“Creation and Evaluation of a Laboratory Administration Curriculum for Pathology Residents” by Dr. Jeannette Guarner and coauthors appears in the October issue of AJCP. The article addresses the need for more training in laboratory administration. In a November article by Dr. Timothy Amukele et al, “Drone Transport of Chemistry and Hematology Samples Over Long Distances,” the authors describe a novel method for transporting clinical specimens using drones. In the December issue, Dr. Robert Smith and colleagues measure whether laboratory charge display has an effect on test ordering in their article “Impact of Laboratory Charge Display Within the Electronic Health Record Across an Entire Academic Medical Center: Results of a Randomized Controlled Trial.” These articles and others can be accessed at https://dbpia.nl.go.kr/ajcp as part of your ASCP membership.

Lab Medicine

The November issue of Lab Medicine features two review articles. The first, by Dr. Neil Harris and colleagues, is “Coagulation Testing in the Core Laboratory.” The second, by Dr. Anthony Parker et al is “The Clinical Utility of Measuring IgG Subclass Immunoglobulins Immunological Investigation for Suspected Primary Antibody Deficiencies.”

In “Employee Engagement is Vital for the Successful Selection of a Total Laboratory Automation System,” Yu et al conclude the complicated process of automating a laboratory requires not only buy-in from administration, but participation of key stakeholders.
