Abstract
This chapter discusses the emergence of monasticism. It explains that the sporadic raids of the Hungarians and the Saracens precipitated a crisis, which struck right at the very function of monasticism within society at the end of the ninth century. The crisis involved a rapid redefinition of the status of monastic establishments in relation to new territorial law powers or territorial religious powers. Monastic reforms were almost always tied to the personal initiative of certain monks or abbeys, and strongly connected to the local aristocracy. The chapter explains that fascination for solitude and asceticism was the cause of the foundation of new monastic branches.
