Abstract
This chapter examines the meaning of the crusades for nobles who thought about their family past. More specifically, it discusses the mechanism that links narratives of ancestry and the crusading past. It also considers how performances in celebratory public environments reminded twelfth-century men and women of the deeds of their crusading ancestors and helped elucidate the place of the crusading past within the social or collective memories of medieval noble families and households. It argues that moments when the itinerant nobility visited particular sites within their domains presented opportunities for formal evocations of the past and family storytelling. The surviving dynastic historical narratives and the stories they contained were widely used for the purposes of commemoration, moral instruction, and the enhancement of familial honor and reputation. These narratives include family history and the history of the crusades, along with epic and romance literature.
