This painting, entitled “The Villa of San Pedro Alejandrino,” is by an unknown Colombian artist. The scene is the ranch in Santa Marta, Colombia, where Simon Bolivar (1738–1830), the renowned South American leader, died of tuberculosis. The story of Bolivar’s last, futile campaign to unify the northern region of the continent and his battle against the progression of his illness, ending with his death at the villa, is told in the novel, The General in his Labyrinth, by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The painting is in a private collection. (Ann Arvin, Cover Art Editor)
