transmission electron micrograph of the original isolate of a novel coronavirus associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS); the isolate was cultured in fetal rhesus kidney cells. Viral particles ranging in diameter from 55 to 90 nm are present within membranebound vesicles in the cytoplasm and on the surface of the cell. Short electron dense spikes or peplomers are visible on the surface of the viral particles. Original magnification,x21,000.
