This painting is an “unmasked” portrait of Dr. Franciscus Chicoyneau (1672 – 1752), the famous French physician who was shown in his plague prevention garb on the cover of the previous issue of Clinical Infectious Diseases. Dr. Chicoyneau was Chancellor of the Universite´ de Me´decine, Montpellier. The portrait was made in 1750, by Claude Arnulphy, Aix en Provence (1698 – 1786), who was a “Peintre du Roi” for the French court. He painted many portraits of members of the French upper classes but is not known for any other work. This portrait of Dr. Chicoyneau is in the collection at Versailles. (Ann Arvin, Cover Art Editor)
Since January 2001, CID has published on its cover an image with a medical theme. Whenever possible we have selected an image with a motif related to infectious diseases. We invite our readers to assist in the effort to identify images— paintings, sculptures, or photographs—that are artistically pleasing and thematically appropriate and that can be reprinted on the CID cover. Kindly advise us of the name of the work, the artist, some details about where it is held, and, if possible, a picture of the work itself. We would be responsible for obtaining the necessary permissions. You would be acknowledged as the contributor of the published image.
