US West Nile Cases Up 19% in Latest Week: CDC
19 September 2012 (Reuters Health [Marice Richter])—The number of cases of West Nile virus in the United States rose by 19% in the third week in September, slowing slightly from its earlier pace but still putting this year on track to be the worst outbreak since 2003, government figures show.
So far this year, 3142 cases have been reported to federal health officials as of 18 September, up from 2636 reported the week before, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in its weekly update of outbreak data.
While still a sharp rise, the rate has slowed somewhat. Earlier in September, the number of cases jumped by >30% in one week. CDC officials have said they believe the peak for new infections was likely in August, and recent spikes were the result of the lag time between infection and states reporting cases.
