Uk Suspects Second Vcjd Case Transmitted by Blood Transfusion
22 July (Agence de Presse Medicale for Reuters Health)—A second case of possible transmission of variant Creutzfeldt- Jakob disease (vCJD) from person to person via blood transfusion has been confirmed in Britain, the Health Department said.
In a statement, it said a patient received a blood transfusion in 1999 from a donor who later went on to develop vCJD. The patient died of causes unrelated to vCJD, but a postmortem examination revealed the presence of vCJD in the patient's spleen.
The Department announced that 2 more groups of people who had received transfusions since 1980 would be excluded from donating blood—donors who were unsure if they have previously had a blood transfusion, and donors who had undergone apheresis.
These 2 groups were not previously excluded because it was not known how this would affect blood supplies. However, it was now clear that there would be only a small impact, the Department said.
