Abstract
Chapters 5 to 7 are devoted to the three main material operations that are constitutive of oikonomia as the management of material goods: acquisition, preservation, and use. This chapter has to do with the acquisition of goods and wealth, a topic raising two main questions. The first is whether or not to put any limitations on acquisition. In addition to determining in part the best acquisition techniques to obtain the desired assets, it also engages the “moral economics” of individuals and cities, that is, the type of desires and values that define the scope of their appetite for acquisition as well as their corresponding attitudes and politics. The second question concerns the nature of the activities or arts that are most conducive to acquisition, the debate being centered on agriculture versus trade.
