Abstract
The first chapter explains how The Sopranos codified the black-market melodrama by twinning Soprano’s mafia and home life. The chapter also uses David Chase’s famous crime drama to examine two of the genre’s key antecedents: the Hollywood gangster film and, further back, the baroque mourning play. A short history of the former (alongside a short history of the US mafia) elucidates how The Sopranos developed the gangster’s relation to family, domestic life, and economic crisis. Walter Benjamin’s account of the mourning play then provides insight into The Sopranos’ fascination with melancholy, sentimentality, belatedness, allegory, and authorial reflexivity. The chapter’s final section reads a sequence in season three that encapsulates The Sopranos’ relation to these antecedent traditions and its treatment of the dot-com bubble, the New Economy, and the AOL-Time Warner merger.
