Abstract
The self-organizing imagination grew not just in intellectual ground, but also in the fertile matrix of late seventeenth century social and cultural life. Like no time before, this period made the experience of complexity a fact of broad European significance. The emergence of the so-called financial revolution, for example, tied Europeans into more complicated and thus more opaque networks. This chapter explores the world of late century complexity: the advent of lotteries, the growth of credit markets and consumer society, the rise of insurance and nascent markets for risk, the fad for gambling, the fashion industry, the new sciences of probability used to understand these complex phenomena, and new ways of thinking about individual agency. These developments created a cultural alertness to invisible complex operations, non-linear relations of cause and effect, and the peculiarities of aggregation.
