Abstract

Get Out of My Room! addresses the emergence of teen bedroom culture in the United States during the 19th and 20th centuries. A host of cultural and socio-economic factors are examined along the way, including the rise of modern capitalism, the growing cultural authority of middle-class ways of living, technological innovation, intellectual support among social scientists and their allies in the media, the tendency towards smaller families, the creation of a teen subculture based on leisure and consumption, and shifting views on housing. This book suggests that the teen bedroom is something more than just a haven for moody teenagers, a space where adolescents can sleep, study, and entertain themselves. It is an intensely personal space whose boundaries have been shaped in an exceedingly public manner by child psychologists, business interests, members of the cultural community, popular advice experts, and, of course, the teenagers and parents who negotiated the boundaries of this unique space within the home.
