Abstract
Both classical and Christian traditions of glory are reworked in the culture of the feudal monarchy. With the absolute monarchy, all glory radiates from the king. Notions of the role of self-interest in structuring society take a particular turn in France with Jansenists and moralists distinguishing between self-interest oriented toward profit and material well-being, on the one hand, and self-interest oriented toward recognition, on the other. Fénelon’s notion of a pure, disinterested love finds echoes in the political sphere.
