Abstract
This chapter brings together texts from a variety of sources and dates—historiography, biography, anecdotes, political theory, and inscriptions, both official and unofficial. Plutarch tells the story of an Argive family that settled in Corinth. An account of the assassination of Hipparchus comes as a digression in Thucydides' narrative of events in 415, when many Athenians suspected an oligarchical coup and return to tyranny. There has been a dialogue between Hieron and the poet Simonides of Ceos. Plutarch's biography describes the youth of the famous Athenian general Alcibiades. It also addresses fictionalized account of the education and lift of the elder Cyrus. Aelian of Fraeneste was a Stoic rhetorician active around 200 C.E. Ephorus reports the Cretan practice of ritualized pederastic abduction. Theopompus wrote a history of contemporary Greece centering on the career of Philip of Macedon. Gymnastic Law from Beroea can be dated to the mid-second century B.C.E.
