Abstract
This chapter examines what constituted a liberal Protestant anthropology of the spiritual body. It explains that events of sickness and healing were experiences in which liberal Protestants contended directly with how they understood the spirit of God to be felt, sensed and adjudicated in modern bodies and argues that the problem of presence and the concept of sensational forms are framing devices developed by anthropologists to make sense of contemporary religious practice. It also discusses spiritual equilibrium and spiritual intervention, and Paul Tillich's thought about the synthetic unity of the spirit.
