Abstract
This chapter discusses themes that concern conflict, power, and legitimacy. It studies a series of interactions between a family psychotherapist and family members, and emphasizes the fragile and contested character of clinical interactions. It uses the constructs of “social contexts” and “social practices” to argue that contexts and practices provide the key structuring devices of daily life. The chapter also challenges the centrality of narrative as a model for social life in general.
