Abstract
The performance of Islamic language occurs “naturally” according to the ritual rhythms of the days, months, and years, but it is artificially amplified, multiplied, staged, and mediated by various technologies. Furthermore, this soundtrack of daily ritual and periodic, calendrical life-cycle events is complemented by the more capricious sonic manifestations of Muslim pop music culture that provide a backdrop for everything from government-sponsored ceremonies to grocery shopping. Hearing Islam in Indonesia is not an option, but a certainty. This chapter discusses public practices of listening and the creation of an Islamic soundscape—phenomena that have been overlooked and undertheorized in previous works on the expressive cultures of Indonesia.
