Abstract
This chapter examines the ways in which literature participated in Benito Mussolini's regeneration campaign and in the creation of a distinctly Italian and fascist model of modernity. Certainly, not all Italian writers and critics accepted the regime's claim to represent the nation, and few advocated an overtly political literature. Yet most of them shared the dictatorship's desire to foster the production of modern, identifiably national novels and stories that could be exported abroad. They also helped disseminate the moral and spiritual values of Mussolini's revolution that would contribute to the cause of collective transformation.
