France, the United States, and the Algerian War

I first conceived of this book as a kind of sequel to my previous one, The United States and the Making of Postwar France, 1945–1954. Having examined the critical American role in the foundation and early functioning of the Fourth French Republic, I became curious to see how American influence figured in the Republic's collapse in May 1958, and in the eventual predictable outcome of the Algerian War, which precipitated that collapse and brought de Gaulle to power. The State Department records at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. were the obvious focus of my concern. In the meantime, however, the volumes of the French series of Diplomatic Documents were rolling off the presses. I had worked on the materials dealing with U.S.-French relations in the Quai d'Orsay, but I had not suspected, until the appearance of those volumes, which cover all of French diplomacy, just how much the Algerian question dominated the entire functioning of France in the world from 1954 to 1962; especially surprising was the continuity the documents revealed between the international relations of the Fourth Republic and the foreign policy of de Gaulle.
