Many of the plates reproduced below are drawn from the great mass of (largely unsorted) photographs in the royal palace in Kumase, the old palace at Manhyia (a museum since 1995), the National Cultural Centre, the Manhyia Record Office, and the National Archives of Ghana (Kumase). I have spent half a century sifting through these materials. Some of the plates are photographs in private collections and I am most grateful to Nana Kuntanasehene Sewaa Akoto (Rebecca Tandoh) for locating these, and for securing copies and permissions to publish. I also thank Jérôme Carles in Carmaux in the French department of the Tarn. He performed electronic wizardry to get some of the images into a form in which they could be published. My choice of plates has been guided by a simple criterion. I have privileged portraits of those who were involved personally, to a greater or lesser degree, in the making and subsequent history of the text itself. That said, much searching has failed to provide usable photographs of certain participants in the making of the History of Ashanti. Other images might have been reproduced, but I have been mindful of the fact that many such illustrations are already well known to students of Asante, for they have been reproduced, some of them severally, in various works on Asante history and culture.1
