We would like to express our gratitude to the many people whose encouragement, assistance and hard work have made this volume possible. The book finds its origins in a conference grant awarded by the British Academy, and in the Academy’s subsequent invitation to submit a proposal for a volume of its Proceedings. We are deeply grateful for the Academy’s generous support, as well as for the assistance of a number of Academy colleagues in organising the conference and in preparing the volume: James Rivington, head of publications, extended the initial invitation; Portia Taylor, Francesca Williams, and Geetha Nair have steered us kindly and efficiently through the preparation and review process; and Marisa Smith, Penny Collins and Johanna Empson seamlessly made all the arrangements for the conference in December 2017. Carol Fellingham Webb was a meticulous copy-editor, and Helen Flitton has been a helpful guide through the production process. We also thank the Academy’s anonymous reviewers for their feedback, and for their enthusiasm for the project; and Desmond King and Lucia Zedner for their early support. Maria David has given us superb research assistance at every stage of the project; her hard work, good judgement, and keen editorial eye made a key contribution to the quality of the final product. We thank all those who participated in and contributed to the conference, whether as speakers, chairs, or audience members. Last, but of course not least, our warmest thanks go to our authors: not only for their exemplary work but also for their collegiality, good humour, and patience in the face of editorial emails throughout the past three years.
