Biblical Quotations
When not replicating specific manuscripts or early printed books, biblical quotations follow the Clementine Vulgate (for the Latin) and the Douai-Rheims with Challoner’s revisions (for the English). Psalm numbers differ slightly between the Vulgate and reformed Bibles, the latter mirroring the Hebrew Psalm-numbering. In this book both systems are presented in the following format: Vulgate/ Hebrew.
Transcription and Translation
As a rule, English translations are supplied in the body of the text, while the original is provided in the notes, unless the vocal or graphic qualities of the original text are central to the argument. When transcribing texts from manuscripts and early printed books abbreviations have been expanded silently; editorial insertions are in [square brackets] and suggested corrections are in {curly brackets}; Middle and early modern English quotations have been modernised throughout, except when in titles.
Measurements
Centimetres and grams are used for measurements throughout the book. Unless otherwise stated, measurements of manuscripts and early printed books are based on the size and width of the pages themselves, rather than the binding boards. When supplied, weight should be seen as an approximation, rather than an absolute value, as it includes the weight of the (most commonly later) binding.
