Abstract
This chapter asks why there is a tendency towards rule by market and what is the relative importance of globalized trade and investment, the supranational organizations, and domestic politics. It also examines the claim that the national state is coming to the end of its life. This chapter looks first at the argument that globalization will bring about the end of the nation state. It then looks at the international institutions and asks whether they have the cohesion and power to coerce national governments to conform. Then it asks whether the economic forces of world markets are strong enough to ensure homogeneity of government policies. Finally, it assesses whether there is a future for national politics and national political and economic variety in the global market.
