Abstract
This chapter begins with an overview of the methods which have been used in research on phonetic and phonological development in signing children. It then turns to a consideration of certain properties of signs which are key to an understanding of the phonetics of signs, and which will also prove important to an understanding of the current literature on articulatory development in signing children.
